Becaming friend with Oxford

‘There’s still a lot of work to do, and there will always be’. That’s Alan’s motto, though it’s far, far away of being something pessimistic. Quite the opposite, it can be the best way to keep in our minds that we must work hard and never ever give up about our goals and aims in LGBTQI+ field. There will always be hands that need to be held, voices that need to be heard.

I had the opportunity to meet Alan and Harry last week in Oxford. They are the heads of Oxford Friend, an organization supporting LGBTQI+ people through counselling, which they do by phone, email or facebook. Though the situation of LGBTQI+ people in the United Kingdom is better than the rest of Europe, they always try to find those who are more vulnerable or in a risky situation. For instance, they have regular meetings with some prisoners, supporting and counselling them during the time they have to spend into prison.

When I thought I had been stuck in the same point of my research in LGBTQI+ field for months, I meet Alan and Harry and then they helped me open my mind. Thank you for the time we spent, the good vibes and the strength to keep struggling to reach an improvement of the LGBTQI+ community.

Nova Glavca: fokusna skupina

Society matters

Cambodia is an southeast asian country which is currently living a situation about LGBTQI+ rights that may seem odd for some of us. Cambodian policy and laws are changing in order to improve the actual situation of LGBTQI+ rights, and the government have finally decided to take part in that questions. Besides, the most relevant religion there is buddhism, which unlike christianism and islam don’t hold prejudices against homosexuality; Buda said love doesn’t distinct between gender or sexual orientation, everyone can love and be loved. In the same direction, different business are developing an increasingly number of alternatives to promote LGBTQI+ tourism. So what’s slowing down the improvement of these inspiring expectatives?

The right answer is family. We’re not talking about a concrete number of them, but family as a social institution which resists changes and influences in order to preserve traditions. Honour is an important value in cambodian families, which means you have to get married and have children to not dishonour your relatives. In addition to this, gender roles boundaries are strictly delimited which made lot of lesbians decide sexual transitioning into men to be accepted. Moreover many gays agree to get married with women to not tear family ties while keep having sporadic sex with men. Cambodian society tolerate this behaviours if they don’t affect the traditional family structure.

That’s why we must emphasise the relevance of society to be changed, seeking for an improvement in education and social rights. It’s unbearable that economics interests are achieving more successfully this LGBTQI+ goals than social policies do. And what’s more, we must realise that the definitive and real change in this field only can be reached from this latest.

LGBTQI+ at school

“We have such a responsibility to guide our young

so that they don’t end up falling apart,

falling by the wayside, becoming insignificant”

Detachment

However, it seems that we don’t even mind what’s happening in front of our eyes. We leave them fall apart They are dying and we’re all guilty, because we don’t do anything to prevent it and we’re accomplices of those murders not reporting what we see. We’re behaving like inactive observers seeing a dramatic theatre piece. Though we have the opportunity to stop all this cruelty and madness, we have decide to do nothing. Which are now our excuses? Please, don’t tell me that you found it funny somehow or these are just meaningless children jokes.

“Murder? Whom?”. Those might be your questions now, so I’m going to answer them, starting with the last one. Lot of LGBTQI+ adolescents ‘commit’ suicide because they have been suffering bullying due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. First of all, and answering now the first previous question, we’re not facing suicide commitment cases, but social murders, consequence of a poor, or nonexistent, sexual education in schools. We have no idea about what these kids and youngsters are going through. Society makes us think they have a problem, furthermore, they are the problem.

Changing this situation is in our hands and education is the only resource we have to battle and change this unacceptable situation. Stop that disgusting words, that bullying actions, put an end to discrimination. We have no time to waste, every person matters!

HIV Equal

Human beings need to show who they are and love, what they think and like. Everyone has the necessity of screaming out loud that we are here and want to be respected just the way we are. Art is how lot of people choose to do that. So, why don’t we use art to promote HIV testing and fight against HIV stigma? This is the choice of HIV Equal.

“HIV Equal is an USA multimedia campaign and online magazine that aims to end HIV stigma and promote HIV testing by creating a social art movement that changes the way people think about HIV and which reopens the national dialogue about HIV.” In addition there is an interesting section about healthy practices and HIV prevention and also another one about education.

Everybody has an HIV status (negative or positive), so there is no real differences between any of us. The important issue is to realize this fact and be aware of the relevance of HIV testing to know our own status.

Finally, here there are two shorts about HIV+ people I found on HIV Equal website. Enjoy!
